As an official PAFF selection, the film will be In Competition and eligible for Jury Awards to be announced at the conclusion of the festival.

PAFF kicks off on February 8 at the Cinemark, Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles CA. The film will be screened on Feb. 15 (3:55pm), Feb. 17 (5:10pm) and Feb. 19 (9:25pm). Called by The Citizen (Kenya) “a sensational musical journey with a powerful message,” the PAFF selection is one of many international successes for “The Lucky Specials.” Since its launch last year, the film has been selected by 11 prestigious film festivals across the world; had major premiere events in Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Maputo, London, Geneva, and Washington DC; and broadcast in 14 countries on three continents.

Its biggest wins include the SIGNIS Award at FESPACO; Best First Time Filmmaker at the 2017 San Francisco Black Film Festival; the 2017 Telly Award; and the 2017 Golden Eagle CINE Award. It also recently received a nomination by the 12th Annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS).

Established in 1992, PAFF LA showcases a broad spectrum of Black creative works each year, screening over 150 new films each year from the U.S., Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, South America, Europe, the South Pacific and Canada. These films showcase the diversity and complexity of people of African descent and challenge negative stereotypes. PAFF is also the largest Black History Month event in the U.S. during the month of February.
